Getting an online degree: what about the exams?

Hi,

How do online programs proceed for the exams ? They say everything is online... so does it mean that the finals are online too?

Having an online exam sounds weird to me (because people can easily cheat); is it possible?

Thank you in advance.

Getting an online degree: what about the exams?
exams for online courses are timed...

you open the link and from there you are given a set amount of time to complete the exam...once that time is up the link shuts down and what ever you have written on the exam, thats it. of course you can cheat, but you wont have much of an opportunity to answer more than a few questions...you can refer to study notes but thats about all you have time for. the exam are structures so that if you know the information you will do well, if you dont, well you dont have time to be looking up answers...
Reply:yes it is possible to do it u can get a good time.
Reply:Yes you could cheat really but sometimes they make the final much more complicated just because it is not in a classroom setting. I know because I have been in a classroom and I took on line courses. It really depends on the course you are taking.
Reply:Hello.

There are several ways online courses can grade. They can use limited time intervals for log ins. By limiting the time on an exam, and limiting the times you can login it does limit cheating to a certain extent. If you don't have the time to lookup every answer in the book, it makes it harder to cheat.

There are some online tutorial programs (like blackboard for exmaple) that if you open another window, the test closes and locks you out of the exam. That is another way to limit cheating.

of course there are degree programs like mine, where there is no final exam. You must complete a learning portfolio that has about 6 to 10 different things you have created in the course of the semester. If you don't have them, or they are not up to the grading criteria you don't pass the class.

It is always possible to cheat, it just depends on the person. I knew someone who paid another student to take exams for him. (I found this out after the fact). But it didn't help him because the student who he paid got a D on the final.

There are lots of degree programs out there now that are completely online. If you don't like taking tests, there are programs where you complete projects and create artifacts that demonstrate you have learned the materials.

And there are ways to limit cheating on online exams.
Reply:usually a school have a testing center for people who cannot take exams in scheduled time and for on line students

if you take classes in on line school it can has online tests - those are "on time" quizzes - yes, people can cheat if they quick enough or have someone who do the quiz for them

that is because education is for you, not for the school, and you should be interested in getting real knowledge
